Ingredients

  • 6 medium apples
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 cup corn syrup
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon red food coloring
  • 1 teaspoon black food coloring
  • sticks for dipping

Instructions

  1. Wash and dry the apples, then insert the sticks into the top of each apple.
  2. In a saucepan, combine granulated sugar, corn syrup, and water over medium heat. Stir until the sugar dissolves.
  3. Bring the mixture to a boil without stirring. Use a candy thermometer to monitor the temperature.
  4. When the mixture reaches 300°F (hard crack stage), remove it from heat.
  5. Add food coloring and stir quickly to combine.
  6. Carefully dip each apple into the syrup, twisting to coat evenly. Let excess syrup drip off.
  7. Place dipped apples on wax paper to cool until the coating hardens.

Notes

  • For a fun twist, try adding some edible glitter to the coating!
  • Be careful with hot sugar, it can cause burns.
